September 2009 To: Lodge Secretaries, Worshipful Masters, Senior Wardens, Lodge School Award Committees, and Deputies of the Grand Master From: Grand Lodge Committee on Public Schools Subject: 2009-2010 Grand Lodge Scholarship Awards Program It is with pleasure we announce the Grand Lodge Scholarship Program will again award scholarships to deserving high school students and recognize the Washington State Educator of the Year. We anticipate ten (10) $1,000.00 scholarships and one (1) award for Educator of the Year. All awards will be presented by individual Lodges at your School Awards Night (or other suitable awards program) in April/May, 2009 1. Winners from each Lodge must be High School Juniors or Seniors at time attached application is completed. If your Lodge has Award/Scholarship programs for Juniors, you may submit one Junior boy and one Junior girl. If your Lodge has Award/Scholarship programs for Seniors, you may submit one Senior boy and one Senior girl. If your Lodge has programs for both Juniors and Seniors, you may submit the 4 Lodge winners. In addition you may submit one Senior boy and one Senior girl for the Vocational scholarship. 2. Attached form must be used for final competition (no other forms from other organizations will be accepted). 3. Lodges must submit scholarship applications and Educator of the Year Nominations for District competition to District Deputies of the Grand Master no later than March 13, 2010. 4. Deputies of the Grand Master will evaluate all District applications. If you have Lodges with Junior programs, submit the top Junior girl and top Junior boy finalists applications. If you have Lodges with Senior programs, submit the top Senior girl and top Senior boy finalists applications. If your District has both Junior and Senior programs, submit 4 applications, the top Junior boy and girl and the Top Senior boy and girl, plus one Senior boy and one Senior girl vocational scholarship. In addition, at least one scholarship will be awarded to the Masonic Youth applicant. (Please Note: A letter of recommendation must accompany the Scholarship Application Form.) Also submit the top Educator of the Year nomination form. All applications/nominations must be in the hands of the Chairman of the Committee on Public Schools absolutely no later than April 2, 2010. 5. Winners of Grand Lodge Scholarship’s and the Educator of the Year will be announced to affected Worshipful Masters and Deputies of the Grand Master by telephone no later than April 7, 2010. Plaques and instructions for the recipient to claim his/her scholarship will be coming from the Grand Secretary approximately 2 weeks later. 6. Each Lodge is encouraged to utilize all available media to publicize the awarding of Lodge Scholarships, Grand Lodge Scholarships and Educator of the Year awards. If one of your students or educators are selected as Grand Lodge finalists, you are requested to submit a black and white “bust” photo (year book photos are suitable) to the Masonic Public Relations Committee for possible use in statewide publicity. Brother Secretary, would you please distribute the enclosed letters to the Worshipful Master and Senior Warden and ensure that a copy of this letter and all other enclosures are delivered to the Lodge's School Awards Committee. The Committee on Public Schools commends all Lodges in our Grand Jurisdiction for participating and recognizing outstanding students and educators in your communities and for the many local scholarships that you award each year. This is in tradition with the history of our great Fraternity and in support of our American Heritage. We want to thank each District Deputy, Worshipful Master, Lodge Secretary and Lodge School Awards Committeeman for their assistance and efforts that allow us as a Grand Lodge to further honor these young citizens and educators.
