The Golf Cart Brigade
Brothers of District 23 developed and implemented a unique idea to provide assistance to residents and most especially shoppers at the Columbia Center Shopping Mall during the holiday season. Each weekend (Friday - Sunday) between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the brothers and in some cases their spouses, manned golf carts to transport shoppers from their cars to the mall entrance and back. The Mall Management was most grateful for the service provided because it had an added benefit. During this holiday season, for the first time in several years, there were no car break-ins, no car - pedestrian accidents, and no car thefts. It was the general feeling that by having the golf carts with flashing amber lights making continuous circuits through the parking lot potential problems were deterred. In addition to meeting many jovial shoppers, the golf cart drivers were rewarded with monetary tips which will be used to support Lodge Scholarship Programs. In all there was over $1000.00 collected. One additional benefit was a news spot on the local television station showing the fraternity in a positive light. The Mall Management has asked "golf cart brigade" to return next year, and they will include them in their seasonal advertisements. If you should need additional information about this program, contact WB John Booth, Junior Grand Deacon, at mjbconst@bentonrea.com and he will give you all the details.
